My gas meter has been locked out. Can you get it back on?

Yes. Goody’s Plumbing resolves CPS Energy gas meter lockouts in San Antonio, and propane lockouts in the Hill Country. We don’t hand you a phone number. A lockout means the utility found a problem on the line, so the fix is to find it and correct it, pressure-test the system, and get it re-inspected and released. Call 830-837-2810. This is time-sensitive if it’s your heat or your hot water. The whole process, who does what and how long it takes, is on the blog: My gas meter got locked out. What happens now?

Do you do propane, or only natural gas?

Both. Many houses in Bulverde, Boerne, Canyon Lake and the surrounding Hill Country have no gas main on the road and run on a propane tank instead. That work is regulated separately, by the Railroad Commission of Texas instead of the plumbing board, and we are registered for it. A tank, a buried yard line, a house line and the appliance drops are one contractor, not two.

Is a permit required for gas work?

For new lines and most alterations, yes, and we pull it. Gas is the one trade where unpermitted work follows the house. It surfaces at resale, at insurance renewal, after an incident, and when the City’s Strike Team finds it.

Can you run a line for a new range, dryer or outdoor kitchen?

Yes. Sizing matters more than length: a run that feeds an existing furnace and water heater won’t automatically carry a new range as well, so the whole system gets sized, not just the new leg.

What about commercial gas?

We do meter sets, risers and manifolds, including the coordination with the utility. The gas service at Urban Office’s Medical Center location on our projects page is ours.

What does commercial gas work look like?

Mostly it is pipe you never see: a service riser, a meter set, and a line carried to wherever the equipment is, which on a commercial building is often the roof. A roof run sits on supports rather than on the membrane, because a pipe lying on a roof wears through it.

I can smell gas.

Leave the building, then call your gas utility’s emergency line from outside. Do not switch anything on or off on the way out. Call us afterward for the repair and the re-inspection, not instead of them.
